Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers to account for the space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. Carriers charge by whichever is greater 鈥?the actual weight or the volumetric weight. This is why a large, light box can cost more to ship than a small, heavy one.

The divisor varies by carrier 鈥?express services like DHL/FedEx/UPS typically use 5000, while postal services like EMS/ePacket use 6000. The carrier charges by whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight.

A lower divisor means higher volumetric weight (more expensive). 5000 divisor = more aggressive volumetric pricing (used by express carriers). 6000 divisor = more lenient (used by postal services). For the same package, 5000 divisor gives 20% higher volumetric weight than 6000.
Use the smallest possible packaging 鈥?avoid oversized boxes. Use flat-rate envelopes/packets when possible. Compare multiple carriers for each shipment. Consolidate multiple items into one package. Negotiate rates if you ship high volumes. Consider slower shipping methods for non-urgent items.
